K-6 Art Show

The K-6 Annual Art Show took place yesterday in our 150 Building!

“The Art Show is something our families look forward to every year. This event allows our community to celebrate the growth of our young artists, as well as enjoy time together in one place!” said 468/486 Art Teacher, Mrs. Shortridge.
Students in grades K-4 hand-selected artwork they were most proud of to be displayed in the Art Show. Teachers made sure that all students in those grade levels were represented. Students in grades 5-12 had smaller masterpieces throughout the show.

Both individual 2D and 3D work were displayed, as well as some collaborative murals worked on by multiple artists in a class. Since art lessons shift every year due to students’ interests, specific projects varied throughout the exhibit, spanning all mediums, including clay, weaving, collage, painting, drawing, and mixed media.
A 1st Grade Student recounted how it is possible to learn through art. “You can learn different things while you’re making art; you can be a problem solver,” said Mackenzie B. “Painting makes us happy.”

Families were excited to see their children’s works of art in the show. Many parents and guardians took pictures of their little ones in front of their pieces. 468/486 Art Teacher Ms. Harris explained, “Part of being an artist is exhibiting your work for the community to experience it. The Art Show is a great opportunity for our young artists to connect with the community and take pride in their hard work!”
Tanisha S., a Kindergarten student, said, “We want everybody to see how good we’ve been doing in art. Art class is important because you can learn how to make all sorts of creative things. The coil pots were my favorite project; I loved painting them. I’m making an art gallery at home that I’m proud of.”

For a lot of students, this was their first Art Show experience. Some may have even decided that night that they want to be professional artists like Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, or Keith Haring. Or that they want to be art teachers just like their CCS instructors – Mrs. Shortridge, Ms. Harris, Ms. Stanton, Ms. Gaile, and Ms. Januzelli. Either way, all students who participated in the Art Show should be very proud of themselves and continue to express themselves through art!
