7th and 8th Grade Spelling Bees

December 3, 2021

Today our 7th and 8th Graders competed in grade-specific Spelling Bees! Our 7th Grade had 20 competitors while 8th Grade had 17. In the end, there could only be four finalists from each grade.

When asked how she feels about being a spelling bee finalist, 7th Grader, Simran, said, “I feel good and proud. It is a little weird that I am the only girl, but it makes me pretty proud. I don’t know how far I’m going to get after this, but I’m proud of myself for trying.”

The 7th Grade students competed word for word first, followed by 8th Grade. There was a lot of good sportsmanship shown as each grade cheered for one another from the audience. As the challenge got longer, the amount of students spelling got smaller which brought out some of the different strategies that students use to help them spell. 8th Grade finalist, Hailey said she writes words on her arm with her finger while she spells because it helps her brain read the word instead of just hearing it. She said, “Reading the word allows me to perceive it better. I think it’s a great tactic to use if you have trouble perceiving words you hear.”

The eight Middle School finalists will go on to compete in the CCS school-wide Spelling Bee Tournament of Champions next week, but there can only be ONE winner. The winning bee will go on to the Chester County Spelling Bee held at the CCIU in early 2022. Good luck in the next round, Cougars!
