Students in Ms. Harris’ Kindergarten and 1st Grade Art Classes in 468/486 got their hands dirty as they started crafting jewelry from clay today!
Ms. Harris gave her students pre-made clay pendants for them to gently step on to make a neat pattern. After their pendants were stepped on, she gave them more clay to make beads. As the students molded and kneaded their lumps of clay, they quickly learned that the texture is different from Play-Doh that dries out much quicker than clay which comes from mud. One student said, “I like clay better than Play-Doh because it’s made out of mud!”
When asked what her favorite part about teaching clay to the little ones is Ms. Harris said, “The fact that most of them never touched [clay] before.” She went on to say, “I get to be the first person to introduce them to clay.”
At the end of class, Ms. Harris placed the students’ unfinished creations on the drying rack for them to work on next time they have Art. Eventually, they will paint their jewelry and take them home to their families.
